SHO DO is the art of writing Chinese and Japanese characters beautifully with a brush and ink.
Not only does it develop beautiful handwriting, but it also brings you a variety of benefits, such as improving concentration and discipline, boosting self-confidence and motivation, and improving posture.
JAPANESE CALLIGRAPHY COURSE. SIX WORKSHOPS. £185

#1 - 12TH April ; Write meaningful words in Kanji (Chinese characters)
From the choice of the instructor, a challenge to write 1, 2, 3 and 4-character words. This time, write 1 and 2 characters on normal-sized paper.
For example,
1 character – heart, love, smile, friend, way(road), sky, clouds, rainbow, spring, wave, sea, bird, cat, dog, sparrow, etc.
2 characters – country names (GB, Japan), peace, blue sky, spring wind, robin, white clouds, wild flower, family, etc
#2 - 19th April: Write meaningful words in Kanji (Chinese characters)
From the choice of the instructor, a challenge to write 1, 2, 3 and 4-character words. This time, write 3 and 4 characters on a longer paper.
3 characters – Mt. Fuji, cross road, bushido, snow moon flower, etc
4 characters – choose from Japanese sayings
#3 – 26th April: Learn to write Hiragana and Katakana
Hiragana and Katakana are Japanese original characters created more than a thousand years ago from Chinese characters for daily use in Japanese life.
In the class, write Hiragana and Katakana words:
Hiragana – soft and round shapes. Mostly used for particles and verb-ends in the sentences, but not only for those purposes and used widely on many occasions. Children start learning writing hiragana at the beginning.
Katakana – Children start learning writing katakana after hiragana. Mostly used for foreign borrowed words, created words, and onomatopoeia.
BREAK A chance to practice your new skills
#4 - 31st May: Write your favourite words in calligraphy
Bring your favourite English words, and then the instructor will put them into Japanese in calligraphy so you can write.
Create your own short sentence or haiku poem, bring them and hand them to the instructor so that the instructor will give you calligraphy of those in Japanese characters. (don’t have to do it in the class, you can prepare before the class or send it to the instructor before the next class)
#5 – 7th June :Write your own short sentence / haiku poem in calligraphy
Write your own created short sentences or haiku poem in calligraphy. You can write them in English too with calligraphy ink and brush if you prefer.
#6 – 14th June Finishing work
Choose long papers or decorated papers to finish the work. Choose words/sentences/poems from you did in the course. Name and sign (or stamp) to finish.
JAPANESE CULTURAL WORKSHOPS
#1 – ARIL 12th 2.00pm Origami craft (for children and adult) (1hour) £15
Using origami papers (without using scissors) create a crane, box, dog, cat, etc.
#2 - April 19th 2.00pm Introduction to Japanese Caligraphy (2 hours). £38
Learn the how to write with ink and brush. Take home your name written in japanese calligraphy. Brushes ink and oaer provided

#Japenese Cutural Festival August 2nd - 3rd
Workshops, events and activities over the holday weekend
#1 – Haiku (90 minutes) £25
Haiku are created with 5-syllable, 7-syllable and 5-syllable words. Words related to the season are used in the poem. In the short workshop, you can create your own haiku works in English. It can then be translated to Japanese and written on the decorated papers to bring home.
#2 – Fan making (1 hour) £15
Decorate and make your own fan. A white fan, calligraphy pen, ink, coloured pen and decorated papers will be provided.
#3 – Japanese flower arrangement (1 hour) £15
Learn the basics of Japanese flower arrangement. Bring your own flowers and a vase or a fruit bowl.
#4 – Make a Japanese meal (90 minutes) £25
Making gyoza (dumpling), onigiri (triangle shaped rice ball) and miso soup (Japanese daily soup).
Gyoza and onigiri – Learn how to make the shape. (Ingredients provided)
Miso soup – Demonstrate how to make miso soup easily. (Ingredients provided)
#5 – Japanese historical literature (90 minutes) £25
Enjoy the classics of Japanese literature, including tales and short poems whilst looking into the culture of those days.
#6 – Zodiac animals (90 minutes) £25
Learn 12 zodiac animals and write those symbols with calligraphy brush and ink for you to display at home in the new year, every year.
